Arvo Pärt and French
Ligita Sneibe (organ)
Programme: A. Pärt, E. Gigout, J. Alain, O. Messiaen, T. Dubois, J. Demessieux
This concert programme alternates between Arvo Pärt’s stripped-down, meditative sound world and the colourful, often virtuosic expression of French organ music. Pärt’s music moves in quiet circles, where every tone carries inner significance, while the French tradition offers rich harmonies, dramatic gestures, and technical brilliance. Together, these contrasts form a musical journey between contemplation and exultation.
The programme includes Arvo Pärt’s most prominent organ works (Annum per annum, Trivium, Pari intervallo) and intimate meditations (Mein Weg hat Gipfel und Wellentäler, Spiegel im Spiegel), with the composer reflecting on faith, life’s path and eternity. This contemplation is complemented by French organ music jewels of the 20th century – Jeanne Demessieux’s pious reflection In manus tuas on the theme of Gregorian chants, Théodore Dubois’ In Paradisum, rooted in the French romanticism tradition, Eugene Gigout’s virtuous Toccata, Jehan Alain’s divine musical inheritance Littanies and Olivier Messiaen’s Dieu parmi nous, which with a gleaming light tells on the coming of God among people.

Annum per annum. Bach and Pärt
Rihards Millers (baritone)
Diāna Jaunzeme - Portnaja (organ)
Programme: J. S. Bach, A. Part
The concert shall be a conversation between the baroque era sacred music by Johann Sebastian Bach and minimalist transparent works by Arvo Pärt, revealing the similarities of both composers’ spiritual beliefs and musical dimension. The title of the concert “Annum per annum”(meaning “year by year”) symbolically marks the sense of eternity and the flow of time through centuries.
The concert includes Bach’s solemn and expressive organ opuses – Toccata in D minor (“the doric one”) and Fugue in D minor, as well as soul-touching arias from St. Matthew Passion and the cantata Ich habe genug, revealing a person’s inner conversation with God and the desire for being freed. Arvo Pärt will be represented by his most famous organ opuses Annum per annum and Trivium, as well as vocal works Vater unser and My heart’s in the Highlands, vividly showing Part’s distinctive “tintinnabula” style, which creates the feeling of never-ending quiet and eternal space.

BAHS. DUBRA. DEBISĪ. Ciklā VASARAS KLASIKA. Orķestris “Rīga” un Valdis Butāns
In the summer of 2025, the grand halls of Riga Cathedral will once again resonate with the sounds of the Orchestra "Riga" as it presents its concert series Summer Classics/ Vasaras Klasika. On August 5th at 19:00, classical music enthusiasts will be treated with the concert BACH. DUBRA. DEBUSSY.
The program highlights three masters of classical and contemporary symphonic music. J. S. Bach and C. Debussy represent two pillars of the Baroque and Impressionist traditions, while Rihards Dubra a renowned Latvian composer, brings contemplative depth and modern resonance to the evening’s repertoire. The program includes J. S. Bach’s E-flat major Prelude and Fugue, BWV 552, in an arrangement by D. Hunsberger that brings out the full richness of the wind orchestra, and the Concerto in D minor — a transcription of one of Vivaldi’s violin concertos (BWV 596), showcasing Bach’s admiration for Italian brilliance, known for its rich and colorful timbre. Organist Aigars Reinis will also interpret Claude Debussy’s The Sunken Cathedral (La Cathédrale engloutie) — a haunting vision rendered in an evocative orchestration by Jean-Louis Roques. This is paired with Debussy’s ethereal Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, arranged for winds by M. Bašs, opening up new textures while retaining the introspective atmosphere of the original. The two works by Latvian composer Rihards Dubra — Toccata (for organ) and Awaiting the Dawn (for organ and wind orchestra) — create a contemplative finale: music that bridges liturgical tradition with modern expressivity.
