Programme: J. S. Bach, A. Corelli, H. I. F. Biber, G. Frescobaldi
The concert ‘'Music for Violin and Organ’' will delight lovers of Baroque and late Renaissance music. Ilona Birģele, one of the most active Latvian concert organists, will perform with the outstanding violinist Paula Šūmane, whose violin playing is distinguished by its warm sound and refined sense of style. The concert will feature Johann Sebastian Bach's chrestomatic Toccata and Fugue in C minor, the luminous Fantasia in G minor and one of Bach's most beautiful and tender chorale preludes, “Ich ruf' zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ”. The melodic grace of the violin will be highlighted by Georg Frideric Handel's Sonata for Violin, while Heinrich Ignaz von Biber's Passacaglia for solo violin will reveal virtuosic texture and spiritual symbolism. Arcangelo Corelli's sonata La Follia is a dazzling example of Baroque instrumental music with beautiful melodies and exquisite variations.
