On June 25, Riga Cathedral will be reborn in liturgical light – “Jubilate Deo!” – inviting all to praise God and rejoice in the miracle of creation and the coming of Christ into the world and into our hearts. The concert program unfolds as a narrative of light's triumph over darkness: from the whispered mystery of the world’s creation to humanity’s journey toward the Divine.
The angelic sopranos of twin sisters and birthday celebrants Iveta Apine and Inese Romancāne have shone for decades in Latvia’s professional choirs and solo projects; now their voices will intertwine with Jānis Kurševs’ resounding tenor and the graceful organ playing of Līga Ivāne. The vocal-instrumental mosaic will echo with Heinrich Schütz’s Bible-inspired soundscapes, the spiritual meditations of J. S. Bach, the affirmations of faith from W. A. Mozart’s Great Mass, as well as luminous works by Latvian composers such as Jāzeps Vītols and Ēriks Ešenvalds.
The concert will place special emphasis on the vocal artistry of clergyman, composer, and organist Ingmars Zemzars. A world premiere of his newly composed work, “Beyond the Darkness of the Earth”, has been specially created for this evening.
